As of July 1st 2009 the price on this combo is $254.35 while the price of the 18 volt Lithium Ion 3 piece combo is $249.99. The drill, the impact driver, the charger & the 2 batteries are identical. What this boils down to is that if you order this item you will be paying $4.36 EXTRA for the priveledge of NOT getting a light w/ your combo pack. So unless the prices have changed you should save yourself $4.36 and get a free 18v cordless light with your combo pack.
As for the tools themselves I cannot speak for the cordless drill in these combo packs as I’ve never used it. Haven’t used the light either. But I have used this model of the Impact driver & it’s a winner all the way around. I have also used older, non-lithium ion versions of several makita drills & I owned the old non-lithium ion (nickel cadmium i believe) version of a makita work-light & they were great tools. Unfortunately my old set was stolen w/ many of my other tools so I guess I finally get to upgrade myself into modern times & get the lightweight lithium ion stuff
Also I guess I’ll mention I have used makita lithium-ion drills before, but the 3/8″ variety i believe & not the 1/2″. They all worked well. I haven’t used a makita cordless tool that I haven’t liked that was made in the last 10 years.

This product is “Made in China.” Makita apparently doesn’t make it’s products in Japan anymore.
So, you only get about half the power for half the time, and the battery life is terrible. One of the two batteries I have won’t take a charge and is completely dead after four months, and five charges. If you really need a cordless drill, buy a Panasonic.
Even DeWalt and Milwaukee are having their newer tools made in Mexico and China, not America.

I have yet to use them but the Makita set seems very nice. I also considered the Milwaukee and Dewalt but the battery charge time (15 minute charging system) and weight/comfort were key points on the Makita. I have used both Makita and Milwaukee in the past and haven’t been disappointed. The driver drill seems to be quite a powerful cordless tool but the Impact Driver is a real deal. Again, haven’t used yet but I think they are going to be great tools for the money.

I have had great luck with reconditioned tools in the past, but this combo was another story. The drill, the driver and the batteries definitely had signs of tough use to the point of embarrassment. The drill smoked after a short function test and one of the batteries was cooked, would not take a charge. However, after paying the postage myself – my money was returned to me. I am out $20. for shopping hard – lesson learned, buy new tools.

I am a commercial carpenter. I have previously owned makita drills and impact drivers. This one is a disapointment. The batteries do not last very long. I needed to change them about every 20 – 30 minutes when screwing 1/2 inch plywood to 20 gauge studs using the impact driver. I like my 14.4 makita impact driver better even if the battery does weigh more. The drill is ok but underpowered for any serious drilling; I was barely able to drive 2 3/8″ screws through 2×6’s into 18 gauge studs. If you are looking for a serious work tool don’t buy this. If you are looking for a gift for your wife, this is perfect.
