Let me disclose up front that I’m a novice with power tools, so when I was in the market for a drill and circular saw, I was looking for something affordable that would hold up for small “do it yourself” projects around the house. What drew me to this kit was the price and quality (based on the homework I did). Let me just say, I’m very pleased with my decision to purchase this set.

Keep in mind, I have had the kit for just one weekend, but I used it extensively in a small project to lay down floor in my attic. Here are some quick review notes for each item in the kit:

Soft case: It’s adequate; big enough to hold the drill, saw, batteries and charger.

Two batteries and charger: The two 18 volt batteries were fully charged in well under an hour each.

Drill: The drill was excellent…felt as solid as a Dewalt 18 volt drill I’ve used in the past. I used the drill to drive screws into plywood and floor joists…worked great!

Circular saw: The saw accomodates a 6 1/2 inch blade (one blade included). Sliced through plywood and 2×4’s with ease. The blade can be adjusted to make up to 50 degree angle cuts, and also can be raised and lowered several inches, depending on the depth of cut you need to make.

Bottom line: I think this is a great value for your money. If you are looking for a solid drill / circular saw combo for home projects, this is quite a bargain! I don’t know how well this will hold up over time since I’ve only used it for one project…but so far it’s fantastic!

I purchased this combo kit for the first time in May 2009.

    Two big disappointments:

First, the chuck on the drill had a slight wobble causing the tip of the drill bit to rotate off center 1-2 millimeters. This would make precise drilling very difficult. I tried many different bits so it was clear to me this was the chuck.

Second, the design of the circular saw makes it almost impossible to use with a fence for straight cuts. A part of the motor housing hangs very low and prevents the flat horizontal plate surrounding the blade from running along a straight edge.

Complaint #2 is fundamental and cannot be overcome. However, even after returning and repurchasing the kit, The new drill also had a wobbly chuck! Why did I purchase again? The price is right and I figured for light construction work it was sufficient. Unfortunately after 2 defective drills, I’ll now be looking elsewhere…

I’ve been a Porter Cable fan for many years. I’m not a professional in construction but some of my friends are. I however have domne a lot of work around my house and Porter Cable has been my weapon of choice across the board for durability and safety. I’ve built a deck out back that is huge and even added an extension onto my home that is 12′ X 36′ being used for a closed in roofed porch. Porter Cable tools did it all with the help of my wife and myself.

That being said, There were some recent projects I needed to do of a minor nature like install the braces for the new 46″ Plasma TV to the wall. I discovered that the batteries for my Porter Cable Drill would not hold a charge. Well, I had the thing for many years and it lasted longer than average. It paid for itself. The batteries are no longer made. Time to get a new drill.[...]

I put both the drill and the saw through the paces cuz I had some more projects I had put on the side for awhile. Guys like to play with new toys like this. Gotta say this. The batteries totally REFUSE to wear down after what I put both tools through! Both the drill and the saw out performed what I expected for tools twice the price! I sawed and drilled everything from pressed board to Pressure Treated 2X4’s. Both the drill and saw powered up just as if they were plugged into an outlet. There was no loss of power or torque after around four hours of steady use. Due to the projects that I had put on hold, I needed more than the 18 tooth blade that came with the saw and bought a 24 tooth, 40 tooth and 90 tooth blades. I highly recommend doing that. I also highly recommend buying this combo kit. It’s awesome.
